Our students are constantly faced with multiple challenges within a quest. As we work through approaching a new challenge, they focus on our 4 Ps to help jump start their progress. We have watched them go through various challenges over the past 9 weeks, and one of the things that stands out most to me is their implementation of the 4 Ps. 
One of our Socratic discussions this week focused on intentionally collaborating and intentionally working independently. We broke our team up into three teams. Teams one and two worked as separate teams to tackle our challenge while team three was broken into individual members who worked alone on the same task. In the end, teams were challenged to show us their drafts, tell us the story behind their creation, and show us the execution of their draft in shaving cream. With a total of 6 teams, 2 groups and 4 independents, we walked through the gallery of 3D shaving cream Hero's Journey maps that were created. Teams included many aspects of a Hero's Journey that we have been discussing such as other people who help along the way, challenges, conflict and detours.
"The King has to face pirates in his journey to land, but he has to reach land to refuel!"
"The seal must face the challenge of a wall in her path. Does she go over, under or through the challenge? Can she do it by herself?"
"Our hero meets others on his journey that keep him going!"
As we further discussed the challenges of working independently versus collaborating, the team realized there was no clear answer. However, they did walk away with a sense of ownership regarding their own learning environments. How did they work together to reach a goal? Did they indeed have a plan and was that plan to the best of their ability? Did they show patience throughout the process of planning? Did they practice their plan? This step is particularly challenging for some of our team as they saw it as impeding how quickly they could complete the challenge. When things got tough, and they did, did they persevere? Did their frustrations keep them from completing the task? Did they continue in spite of the challenges? Did every teammate own their role in the challenge? How did teammates who stepped up when others walked away feel? 
In the end, they all completed the challenge and shared their creative stories of a Hero on a journey.  As they reflected on this particular challenge, they began to share ways this process can be applied in life in general.
One of my favorite comments as this particular challenge wrapped up summarizes this well:
"Our team made a lot of mistakes in this project, but we learned a lot! I bet if we do it again, we will be even better. Can I practice this at home with my siblings?"
With that in mind, I encourage us all, as lifelong learners on our own journeys, to pursue the challenging situations. At home. In the office. To plan. Take a risk. Have patience with yourself and others throughout the process. Communicate. Practice. This is key. Be familiar with yourself and what you are representing. Then, persevere. When things get hard, what will you choose? To self preserve or to follow through?  Throughout the process, self reflection is key. Are you using your own talents to the best of your ability? Are you challenging yourself or hanging out in your comfort zone? If you are outside of all of those, in your panic zone, are you still able to be productive to the level you desire?
